Overnight trains in Thailand are fun, as long as you don’t mind the constant movement, the complete lack of darkness (since they leave the lights on the entire night for safety purposes), and the risk that your bag will go missing while you sleep. On the plus side you get to travel while you attempt to rest, save the cost of a night’s accommodation, and potentially meet some interesting people. Apparently the Bangkok to Chiangmai route now benefits from a new train, with such luxuries as working toilets and the ability to buy beer on board. You still can’t bring your own but if you are desperate for a pint then the prices aren’t eye wateringly terrible and it’s not quite as horrible an experience to get rid of it afterwards. Win-win.
